Erosive enteropathy with reduced cilia

August 21, 2023

Patient C, born in 1980, was referred for video capsule endoscopy for further examination of the small intestine. The anamnesis revealed that in May she had been operated on for cervical cancer, and in August she received a course of radiotherapy.

In December, the patient was admitted to the hospital with a bowel movement. BUN was 40 g/l (three blood transfusions were performed).
During gastroscopy, colonoscopy and CT of the abdomen, no pathology was found, so video capsule endoscopy was prescribed for further examination of the small intestine.
Video capsule endoscopy revealed erosive enteropathy with reduced cilia and significant edema of the ileal mucosa.
The lesion in the small intestine was segmental, with a lesion in the n/3 of the jejunum and lesions in all parts of the ileum. There is no lesion only on 10-15 cm of the terminal ileum. The patient was recommended to undergo further examination with a biopsy from the affected area of the small intestine and was prescribed anti-inflammatory therapy.
This endoscopic picture is not quite typical for IBD, with the highest probability of this lesion being characteristic of radiation enteritis.
